The Broadway debut of School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play opened September 28, 2026 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Directed by Whitney White, the production is presented by Manhattan Theatre Club.
Set at Ghana’s Aburi Girls Boarding School in 1988, the play follows a group of high school girls fixated on competing in an upcoming beauty pageant when a transfer student from America arrives and complicates the competition.
The cast includes Jasmine Amy Rogers as Ericka, Denée Benton as Paulina, Erin Morton as Nana, Nia Otchere-Sarfo as Gifty, Jordan Rice as Mercy, Heather Alicia Simms as Headmistress Francis, and Lucia Aremu as Ama.
The production features scenic design by Teresa L. Williams, costume design by Qween Jean, lighting design by Stacey Derosier, and sound design by Cody Spencer. Nikiya Mathis designed wigs, hair, and makeup.
The play made its world premiere Off-Broadway via MCC in 2017 and has since become a regional theatre production.
