Moulin Rouge! The Musical closes Broadway run August 30

The Tony-winning musical, which opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in July 2019, will end its seven-year run after 2,297 regular performances and 24 previews, becoming the 36th longest-running show in Broadway history.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical, winner of 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical, closes August 30 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York. The production, based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film, opened on Broadway July 25, 2019, following a Boston tryout.

The final company is led by Christian Douglas as Christian and Kelsie Watts as Satine. Original cast member Aaron Tveit, who won the 2021 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, returned for a limited engagement through August 29.

The musical was nominated for 14 Tony Awards in 2020, winning 10 honours: Best Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Tveit), Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (Danny Burstein), Best Choreography, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, and Best Sound Design.

The production officially recouped its Broadway investment in late 2022 and is the only show from that season still running. Like all Broadway productions, it halted performances March 12, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resumed September 24, 2021. The show holds the record for the highest-grossing production in the 100-year history of the Hirschfeld Theatre.

Directed by Alex Timbers with a book by John Logan and choreography by Sonya Tayeh, the musical features covers of modern pop songs including “Firework” by Katy Perry, “Your Song” by Elton John, and “Chandelier” by Sia. The story follows the tragic love story between performer Satine and composer Christian at Paris’ Moulin Rouge.

The production has performed to over 12 million audience members across 15 productions worldwide and is currently playing on a North American national tour, in London’s West End, Germany, Korea, The Netherlands, and other international locations.
