Becky G Discusses Baraja Bendita and Latino Joy at Latin Music Week Music News
Becky G spoke with Billboard co-chief content officer Jason Lipshutz on Wednesday, October 21, at Billboard's Latin Music Week about her fifth studio album, Baraja Bendita, her return to acting and the importance of community.

Becky G said her latest album, Baraja Bendita, reflects the lessons she has learned and the Spanglish, genreless artist she has always been. Speaking during her Superstar Q&A with Billboard co-chief content officer Jason Lipshutz on Wednesday, October 21, the Mexican-American artist discussed the album, which was released in August.

“I definitely feel very blessed,” she said. “I released my album Baraja Bendita, which is my fifth studio album.” The title translates to “the blessed deck of cards,” inspired by the idea that people cannot control the cards they are dealt, but can control how they play them.

Becky described the album as both genreless and Spanglish. She said she did not enter the studio with a strict genre or sonic blueprint and wanted to make fun music. “It allowed me to make a lot more room for fun, for play,” she said.

She recalled one of her first Billboard panels, where she appeared alongside Karol G, Anitta and Natti Natasha. Billboard noted that these artists have helped reshape the visibility of women in Latin music. Becky emphasized that the sisterhood she has built with other women in the industry was earned, not guaranteed. “There was one seat at the table,” she said. “And I think now the season we’re in is we’re building our own table.”

Becky also discussed her return to acting. She said she recently wrapped a boxing film that resonated with her on a “soul level,” touching on coming of age, community and mental health. She said she started acting at age 9 and would like to do more, including producing and directing.

On the theme of community and advocacy, she said, “Latino joy is so important.”

When asked how she stays grounded, Becky said, “It’s always been family.” Becky G was also on the cover of Billboard Español in April.
