Rapper 50 Cent said J. Cole lost the most by staying out of the 2024 battle between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Speaking on The Crew Has It podcast on Tuesday, October 13, he told host Andrew Schulz that competing is part of hip-hop culture.

“I think it’s a part of hip-hop culture to compete,” 50 said. He added that the mistake is opting out of the competition, and that in his view J. Cole “paid the most.”

50 also praised Cole for operating in a way that is non-traditional to hip-hop but authentic to his brand, noting that Cole rides a bike to the studio and does not wear jewelry.

Cole released “7 Minute Drill” in April 2024, then apologized to Lamar onstage at his Dreamville Fest weeks later and removed the track from streaming services. 50 agreed that Drake lost the battle to Lamar but has continued to question what Drake actually lost in life.

Drake released three albums in May, ICEMAN, HABIBTI and MAID OF HONOUR, making him the first artist to hold the top three positions on the Billboard 200 simultaneously. He later added four tracks to HABIBTI and returned it to No. 2 on the albums chart.
