Comedian Shane Gillis returned to host Saturday Night Live for a third time over the weekend, and his monologue drew strong reactions. Rosalía was the musical guest on the same episode.
Actor Dan Levy, known for Schitt’s Creek, posted an Instagram video on Sunday objecting to one joke in particular. In the monologue, Gillis joked about women’s gym shorts using a derogatory term for women. In his video, Levy said that women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them the name Gillis used, and that it makes the men using that name misogynists.
Responses from musicians and public figures
- Jewel thanked Levy in the comments section of his post.
- Kristin Chenoweth commented with a 100 emoji, and Lisa Loeb commented with a fire emoji and a thank-you.
- Maggie Baird, the activist mother of Billie Eilish and FINNEAS, shared the video to her Instagram Story. She said she was reminded of a Bill Burr monologue on the show in 2020 and wrote that it is dangerous for women to promote this kind of humor.
- Flavor Flav shared an article about Levy’s response on X, writing “Important allyship.”
- Maren Morris posted a video of herself on Instagram, soundtracked by her song “be a bitch,” in which she throws up a middle finger to the camera. Her caption referenced her gym shorts.
Gillis was previously briefly a cast member of the show but was dismissed soon after his casting was announced, when past homophobic and racist jokes resurfaced.
