Director Greta Gerwig said she personally met with Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and Jimmy Page to secure the rights to use “Stairway to Heaven” in the first trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, which debuted Tuesday, October 13.
Speaking with Stephen Colbert at New York’s AMC Lincoln Square IMAX theater, Gerwig said: “I was so moved that they allowed me to use this song.” She said the musicians connected with the film in part because of their own love for the work of author C.S. Lewis.
The trailer’s climactic sequence features Meryl Streep voicing Aslan as the song builds and the character takes shape in a burst of light. “Stairway to Heaven” was released on Led Zeppelin’s fourth studio album in 1971. It never charted on the Billboard Hot 100 because the band did not issue it as a U.S. single, but the album Led Zeppelin IV reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in December 1971.
The film adapts Lewis’s 1955 novel The Magician’s Nephew, a prequel to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The cast includes Daniel Craig, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds and Emma Mackey, who plays Jadis.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew opens in theaters on February 12, 2027, and arrives on Netflix on April 2.
