Justin Timberlake has said that his 2006 single “What Goes Around… Comes Around,” from the album FutureSex/LoveSounds, is not about his former girlfriend Britney Spears, as long assumed. According to Rolling Stone, he made the comments in a new video interview with Complex.
When the song was released, listeners believed it was a sequel of sorts to “Cry Me a River,” a 2002 track about Spears that included a lookalike in its music video. Timberlake addressed the rumor directly, telling Complex: “it’s not a personal story from mine.”
He said the song is “actually a personal story from a friend’s. I asked permission.” Rolling Stone reports that Timberlake did not say who the friend was. It adds that the friend was going through a breakup and that the track was modeled after Timberlake’s own public split.
Timberlake also said the song was written in “damn near 20 minutes” and that a 10-minute video was shot for it.
Rolling Stone also reports that Timberlake will take a retrospective look at his career in a newly announced docuseries. The docuseries will also feature Timberlake and Janet Jackson revisiting the Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction.”
