Director Jon M. Chu is prioritizing the script over casting decisions for the Universal Pictures Britney Spears biopic. “We’re just trying to get the story right,” Chu said while attending the opening gala of the George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.
Writer Liz Meriwether is adapting Spears’ bestselling 2023 memoir The Woman in Me for the screen. Chu said he has reviewed portions of Meriwether’s work and praised the effort. “She’s doing so many beautiful things,” he said. “It’s incredible, profound, beautiful.”
Chu noted he receives hundreds of unsolicited audition emails from people worldwide for the role, but casting decisions remain on hold. No actors have been officially announced for the project.
The film was announced in 2024 after Universal Pictures acquired the rights to Spears’ memoir. Marc Platt is producing. Meriwether, known for creating New Girl and co-creating Dying for Sex, joined as screenwriter earlier in 2026. She previously said adapting Spears’ life required rethinking storytelling for a two-hour film format rather than longer narrative forms.
