The Loew’s Jersey Theatre, a nearly 100-year-old venue in Jersey City’s Journal Square, will reopen November 13 as a fully restored live performance space after a $130 million redevelopment project. The venue, originally built in the 1920s as a 3,021-seat movie house by architects Rapp and Rapp, is one of five “Loew’s Wonder Theatres” constructed in and around New York City during that era.
The restoration was a collaboration between the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, the State of New Jersey/New Jersey Economic Development Authority, and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE), which also operates Prudential Center in Newark and White Eagle Hall in Jersey City. The project modernized electrical and plumbing systems, added new heating and air conditioning, and installed a modern sound system while preserving the building’s original character. The venue was added to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1985, requiring restoration work to respect its historic design.
The renovated theatre now features flexible seating configurations accommodating 2,600 to 4,000 guests for concerts, live performances, sporting events, and film presentations. The orchestra seating is fully mobile for standing-room-only shows. The original pipe organ was restored and will be regularly serviced and tuned.
The grand reopening weekend features Trey Anastasio Band on November 13 and The War on Drugs on November 14. Additional scheduled performances include Jodeci (November 18), Derek Hough’s Dance For The Holidays (December 8), Unwrapped: An Acoustic Holiday (December 9), Christmas with Chris Tomlin (December 10), Jeff Dunham (January 9), and World of Warcraft: 20 Years of Music (May 8).
The theatre, which hosted Duke Ellington, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and other performers during its heyday, had faced demolition threats before being purchased by Jersey City in 1993. The location offers accessibility via car, PATH train, and New Jersey Transit to the tri-state area.
