Beyoncé has released a remastered deluxe edition of her sophomore album ‘B’Day’ to mark the 20th anniversary of the original September 4, 2006 release. The edition features Spanish recordings, previously released bonus tracks, and unreleased songs.
New tracks include “Can I Watch You” featuring Pharrell, “Cuerpo Tumbao (Get Me Bodied)” with Colombian artist Maluma, and “Irreemplazable (Como La Flor)” featuring previously released vocals from late singer Selena Quintanilla, whose estate approved the duet. Additional unreleased material includes “Morning Dew (Donk),” “My First Time,” “Lost Yo Mind,” “Creole” and “Back Up.”
Beyoncé remastered the album’s songs and videos, which were recolored and finished in 4K. A revamped visual for “Déjà Vu” featuring Jay-Z was also released. “I wanted the album to be big, percussive, hard, up-tempo, and energized,” Beyoncé said in a statement. “Hip-hop was taking over at the time, but I was fighting to preserve the bridges, melodies, and harmonies that have always been at the heart of R&B.”
The “Cuerpo Tumbao” track marks Beyoncé’s first collaboration with Maluma and samples Celia Cruz’s “La Negra Tiene Tumbao.” The release notes Beyoncé’s long admiration for Cruz’s pride in African culture. The song was produced by Beyoncé, Edgar Barrera and Casta, with co-production by Ali Alvarez.
Beyoncé credited Selena, a fellow Texan, as inspiration for her 2007 Spanish EP “Irreemplazable,” noting she “revered” the late singer and remembered listening to her on Houston radio.
