Duane “Keffe D” Davis was convicted of first-degree murder on Monday in connection with Tupac Shakur’s death on September 7, 1996. The Las Vegas jury verdict marks the first criminal conviction in the nearly three-decade-old case.
Prosecutors alleged that Davis, 63, orchestrated the drive-by shooting as retaliation following an altercation involving his nephew and members of Shakur’s entourage earlier that night. Davis faces the possibility of life in prison.
Shakur’s family released a statement following the verdict: “The family of Tupac Amaru Shakur is elated and relieved by today’s verdict.” The statement thanked jurors, relatives, friends, fans and court officials who supported the family throughout the proceedings. “While this verdict is decades in the making, this is not the end of the story,” the family said. “Tupac’s legacy and impact on the world lives on and we will continue to do everything we can to keep his spirit alive.”
Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, was present in the courtroom when the verdict was announced and later embraced members of the prosecution team. Shakur was 25 years old when he died from injuries sustained in the drive-by attack.
