The revival of August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone closes its Broadway run July 26 at the Barrymore Theatre, where the play premiered in 1988. The production began previews March 30 and opened April 25.
Directed by Debbie Allen, the play is set in 1911 Pittsburgh and follows Herald Loomis, a man searching for his lost wife after seven years of illegal enslavement under Joe Turner. The work is the second in Wilson’s American Century Cycle.
The cast includes Taraji P. Henson as Bertha Holly, Cedric the Entertainer as Seth Holly, Joshua Boone as Herald Loomis, and Ruben Santiago-Hudson as Bynum Walker. The ensemble also features Savannah Commodore, Dominique Skye Turner, Bradley Stryker, Tripp Taylor, Christopher Woodley, and Jackson Edward Davis.
The revival received five Tony nominations: Best Featured Actor in a Play (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), Best Original Score (Steve Bargonetti), Best Costume Design of a Play (Paul Tazewell), Best Lighting Design of a Play (Stacey Derosier), and Best Sound Design of a Play (Justin Ellington).
The original 1988 production at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre ran 105 performances and earned four Tony nominations, with L. Scott Caldwell winning Best Featured Actress. A 2009 revival at the Belasco Theatre ran 31 previews and 69 performances, earning six Tony nominations including Best Revival of a Play.
