Zak Starkey has reunited with The Who for a rehearsal, ending a rift that began when the drummer was dismissed in April 2025 before the band’s U.S. farewell tour. Roger Daltrey announced the reconciliation during a solo performance at the Encore Theater in Las Vegas on Wednesday, telling the audience that he had recently rehearsed with Starkey and “it sounded great,” according to a review of the show in the Las Vegas Journal-Review.
Starkey, who played with The Who for 30 years, confirmed the reunion on social media. “We rehearsed for an afternoon and were absolutely on fire,” he wrote in a statement to Variety. “I’m so happy to be back playing the music I love with people I love. It’s good to be home.”
The exact reasons for Starkey’s dismissal remained unclear, with some attributing it to an on-stage dispute between Daltrey and Starkey during the band’s first performance of “The Song is Over.” Starkey previously stated he was asked to claim the split was his decision, which he refused. “I’m not gonna let people make me look fucking bad and them look good because they want me to lie,” he told Variety in July 2025.
Daltrey told the Arizona Republic that The Who’s U.S. farewell tour, which wrapped in October 2025, was not the end of the band. “It’s not over by any means,” he said. “It’s just that was the last tour of America for the Who.” The group is preparing for a planned European farewell tour, for which the recent rehearsal was conducted.
