Gracie Abrams: ‘Hit the Wall’ Became Album ‘North Star’

Gracie Abrams revealed on the Therapuss podcast that "Hit the Wall," the lead single from her album "Daughter From Hell," became the creative blueprint for the record, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in July 2026.

Gracie Abrams did not know what her third studio album “Daughter From Hell” would become when she wrote “Hit the Wall,” but the song ultimately became the project’s guiding force. During an appearance on Jake Shane’s Therapuss podcast, Abrams discussed the song’s creation and its role in shaping the album, which earned her first No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

At the time of writing, Abrams and longtime collaborator Aaron Dessner had roughly six songs they liked but had not fully produced. The project felt disjointed, leaving both discouraged about its direction. “I think he and I were both sort of feeling a bit discouraged at that point,” Abrams said, noting uncertainty about the album’s sound and themes.

The breakthrough came on an emotionally difficult morning. Abrams was feeling lonely and missing a friend as she headed to the New York studio. Walking down Bleecker Street in tears, she arrived to find Dessner already there, with the piano chords of “Hit the Wall” playing. “It perfectly matched what my walk was,” she recalled. “I was like, this is exactly the thing that I’m feeling.”

The writing process felt almost involuntary. “I don’t remember writing it,” Abrams said. “I just remember it being done.” She immediately recognized the song’s significance and chose it as the album’s introduction. “It felt like it became sort of a north star for the album,” she explained.

“Daughter From Hell,” released July 17, 2026, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 16 tracks. “Hit the Wall,” released in May 2026, peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s central metaphor—hitting a wall, watching everything break apart, and rebuilding—reflected the emotional arc Abrams wanted the entire album to follow.
