Universal Pictures confirmed on Tuesday, July 21 that Snoop Dogg’s biopic, titled Snoop, will release in U.S. theaters on August 6, 2027. The film will be rated R.
Jonathan Daviss, known for his role in Outer Banks, will play the West Coast rap legend (born Calvin Broadus). Craig Brewer, director of Hustle & Flow, will direct the project.
Snoop Dogg first announced plans for the biopic in April at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, stating: “After my brothers got to tell their story with Straight Outta Compton, now it’s my turn.” His CinemaCon remarks noted plans for production to begin that summer.
Universal Pictures previously produced acclaimed rap-focused films including the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton and 8 Mile starring Eminem. The scope of Snoop’s biopic—whether it will focus on a specific era of his career or span his entire life—remains unclear.
Snoop Dogg, 54, continues to release music and collaborate with other artists. He recently teamed with Kurupt and DJ Battlecat for the album Me N the Boyz, released July 17, 2026. To date, he has scored 45 Billboard Hot 100 entries, including the No. 1 hit “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” plus featured appearances on Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and Akon’s “I Wanna Love You.”
