Offset, the Migos rapper whose legal name is Kiari Cephus, will avoid jail time on a misdemeanor assault charge under a court-approved diversion program. A Los Angeles judge approved the agreement at a July 15 hearing, requiring Cephus to complete 50 hours of community service, attend an anger management program, and refrain from possessing firearms, among other conditions, over the next 12 months. The criminal charge will be dismissed if he avoids further legal violations during that period.
According to court filings, Cephus refused to provide identification at the MedMen dispensary near LAX airport on March 13, 2025, repeatedly asking “Do you know who I am?” When the security guard again requested identification, prosecutors said Cephus pushed him and punched him in the left cheek before fleeing after the guard deployed pepper spray.
Prosecutors had opposed the diversion agreement, describing the episode as a “crime of violence against the victim.” However, Cephus’ lawyer argued that more than 14 months had passed since the incident and that her client “has kept his nose clean and has worked steadily to provide for himself and his children.”
The security guard, Jim Leobardo Sanchez, filed a civil lawsuit against Cephus in October, claiming he suffered injuries including headaches and neck pain. Sanchez alleges that Cephus and unidentified individuals accompanying him assaulted and battered him. A hearing in the civil case is scheduled for August 5.
