Justin Timberlake has 39 Billboard Hot 100 entries as a solo artist and 13 more as part of *NSYNC. In an interview with Complex on Thursday, November 5, he ranked the best songs of his career and chose “What Goes Around… Comes Around” as his top pick.
The song, co-produced by Timbaland and Danja, topped the Billboard Hot 100 in March 2007 and appeared on Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds album. “I would put this at No. 1 or No. 2,” he said. “It’s the first song I wrote for FutureSex/LoveSounds.”
Timberlake said the song is not based on his own experience. “It’s actually a personal story from a friend,” he said.
He described the writing process as fast. “This song was written in damn near 20 minutes,” he said. Timberlake placed the song above “Mirrors,” “My Love,” “SexyBack” and “Cry Me a River” in his personal top five.
In the same interview, Timberlake said Kanye West told him that “SexyBack” inspired West’s “Stronger.” Timberlake recalled West joining him onstage at a FutureSex/LoveShow Tour date to perform “Stronger” together.
Timberlake also said he worked on a few songs with Don Toliver after appearing at Toliver’s Miami tour stop in August. Toliver sampled Timberlake’s “Rock Your Body” on his song “BODY.”
