Santa Monica’s inaugural Ocean Way Festival has been canceled following the impact of Hurricane Marie, which reshaped beaches across Southern California. Festival organizers announced the cancellation on Friday via social media.
Organizers said “storm surf and runoff has caused significant beach erosion and the festival can no longer be safely held as planned.” Ticket refunds, which ranged from $249 to $2,250, are being processed automatically. Plans to bring the festival to Santa Monica next year are already underway, though no update was provided on whether the lineup would change.
The festival was originally scheduled for September 26–27 and featured headliners the Killers and Olivia Dean, alongside Jack White, Alvvays, Sublime, Khruangbin, Hiatus Kaiyote, Durand Jones & the Indications, SG Lewis, Blond:ish, and a DJ set from Hot Chip.
Days of intense waves driven by Hurricane Marie have pounded Southern California’s coastline, leaving beaches depleted of sand and damaging homes. As climate change worsens, weather has become a growing concern for festivals.
