Jennifer Finch, the bassist for L7, died Saturday after a battle with brain cancer. She was 59. L7 confirmed Finch’s death in an Instagram post, stating: “With a very heavy heart we announce that our beloved bandmate, friend, and fellow troublemaker Jennifer Finch has passed away today.”
Finch was diagnosed earlier this month with an aggressive form of brain cancer. Initially believed treatable with radiation, complications required multiple surgeries that left her with severe physical limitations. She withdrew from L7’s upcoming U.S. leg of their Last Hurrah Tour, asking bandmates to continue as planned.
L7 formed in 1985, with Finch joining in 1987. She was described in a 2017 profile as “an ill-behaved and untrained bassist who added instant verve to their live act.” The band released their self-titled debut in 1988. Finch served as bassist through most of their 1990s peak before leaving in 1996 at age 30.
After departing L7, Finch played in OtherStarPeople and the Shocker, launched Little Pusher Records, and worked as a photographer. She reunited with L7 in 2015 and appeared on their 2019 album, Scatter the Rats.
Friends and family launched a GoFundMe to cover treatment costs and support creation of an archive of Finch’s work and completion of a significant creative project scheduled for release next year.
