Jennifer Finch, founding and longtime bassist of L7, has died at age 59 following a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer. Her death was announced on July 18, 2026, by her bandmates.
“We are shattered by the loss of our beloved bandmate, sister and friend Jennifer Finch, whose fierce spirit, humor and boundless creativity helped shape L7,” the band said in a statement. They added that Finch “lived entirely on her own terms,” and that her impact “cannot be measured.”
A Los Angeles native, Finch began her musical career in Sugar Babydoll alongside future Hole frontwoman Courtney Love and Babes in Toyland founder Kat Bjelland. In 1986, she joined L7 with Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner. Though her initial bass playing was rudimentary, Finch compensated with a fierce stage presence and instrumental networking skills that helped elevate L7 from the LA underground to national stages, including a booking at Lollapalooza 1994.
Finch contributed to all five L7 studio albums: the 1988 self-titled debut, Smell the Magic (1990), Bricks Are Heavy (1992), Hungry for Stink (1994), and Smell the Rats (2019). She was sole songwriter on tracks including “(Right On) Thru,” “Everglade,” “One More Thing,” and “Shirley.”
Finch left L7 in 1996 following the death of a close friend and roadie, but reunited with the group for their 2014 reunion tour and remained a member until her death. She also founded the punk group The Shocker and appeared in Hole’s “Doll Parts” music video.
