Jack White offered Twin Temple an opening slot at his Hollywood Palladium show in Los Angeles on September 29th, following country singer Charley Crockett’s decision to drop the husband-wife duo from his upcoming tour dates.
Crockett announced Thursday that he had removed Twin Temple from his shows, citing their satanic imagery. “I thought they were like Black Sabbath, but they ain’t. Not today, Satan,” Crockett told Rolling Stone. Twin Temple, formed by singer Alexandra James and guitarist Zachary James, confirmed the removal on social media Thursday.
White responded Friday on Instagram with a public invitation: “Twin Temple, would you like to open my show in L.A. on September 29th at the Hollywood Palladium? Let me know. Get in front of me Satan!” — a playful reference to his 2005 White Stripes album “Get Behind Me Satan.” Twin Temple quickly accepted, calling White a “lifelong” influence and noting that guitarist Alex James had learned “Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground” early in his career.
Crockett defended his decision in a lengthy Instagram post Friday, stating “I won’t conform and I’m not sorry.” He addressed the broader issue of opening acts and artistic compatibility on tour, writing that he reserves the right to change performers if they don’t work for his audience. “I might wake up at 1 p.m. on the back of that bus and find out that the opener ain’t working for me that night.”
Singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis, of Rilo Kiley, publicly supported Twin Temple in White’s comments. Twin Temple is scheduled to open for Danzig in September.
