Macklemore’s Free Palestine Tour began in Dublin on Monday, October 26, with special guest appearances from Hozier, Kneecap and Beoga. The show launched a series of charity concerts. The rapper was removed as an opener on Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour more than a month earlier, after making onstage comments in support of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank and calling for a “free Palestine.”
Beoga, the backing band that dropped out of Sheeran’s tour in solidarity with Macklemore, performed at the event. “The times are changing, we’ve never been prouder to be from the country we’re from,” Beoga said onstage. Hozier praised Ireland’s “global solidarity when it comes to emancipation and justice.” Kneecap said, “They can never silence the truth.”
The lineup was not announced before the show. Palestinian singer-songwriter Lina Makoul performed early in the night, along with M-1 of Dead Prez and DJ Habibeats. Irish actor Liam Cunningham delivered opening remarks. “Enjoying tonight does not mean forgetting about the suffering in Gaza,” he said. Psychotherapist and activist Nadia Greenspan and activist and organizer Samir Eskanda also appeared.
Sheeran said the decision to pull Macklemore from the Loop Tour came down to venue owners and promoters, including Robert Kraft of the Kraft Group. Sheeran’s backing band said it would depart the remaining US Loop tour dates following Macklemore’s removal.
Proceeds from the tour will benefit organizations including Medical Aid for Palestinians, Palestinian Youth Movement, Heal Palestine, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, Gaza Soup Kitchen, Jewish Voices for Peace and UNRWA USA National Committee. The tour’s sold-out run continues in Paris on October 29 and London on October 30.
