Original Rent cast members including Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp will reunite for a sold-out anniversary concert at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on October 26. The performance will also stream live, with on-demand access through October 27 at 11 PM ET via BroadwayCares.org.

Broadway marks the 30th anniversary of Jonathan Larson’s rock musical Rent with a reunion concert on October 26 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The performance is sold out. It will also be streamed live, and available on demand through October 27 at 11 PM ET at BroadwayCares.org.

The evening features much of the show’s original cast, including Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Wilson Jermaine Heredia and Taye Diggs, alongside Rent alumni and other Broadway performers. Michael Greif, who staged the original production, is directing again. Tim Weil, the original music supervisor, is leading the band, which includes original pit members Kenny Brescia, Jeff Potter and Daniel A. Weiss, and newcomer Steve Gelfand.

Rent premiered Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1996 before transferring to the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway. The show brought 1990s-style rock music to Broadway, adapting Puccini’s opera La Bohème with electric guitars in place of woodwinds and AIDS in place of tuberculosis. Composer Jonathan Larson died of an aortic dissection, thought to result from undiagnosed Marfan syndrome, the night before the first preview at NYTW. He was 35.

The Broadway production ran for 12 years and 5,123 performances, closing September 7, 2008. Its Broadway cast album has been certified two-times multi-platinum. The musical has also been staged regionally and internationally, adapted into a feature film with most of the original stage cast, and produced as a live TV production.

Broadway Cares is producing the concert with Baseline Theatrical founder Andy Jones. The performance is licensed through Music Theatre International. The live stream is produced in collaboration with The League of Live Stream Theater.
