Rolling Stone’s Last Man Standing interview series features senior writer Andy Greene in conversation with musicians who are the last remaining members of iconic bands. In this installment, Danny Hutton discusses Three Dog Night, the group that emerged from the Los Angeles music scene near the end of the 1960s.
The band’s hits, including “Joy to the World,” “One,” “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” “Black and White,” and “Never Been to Spain,” helped it sell millions of records between 1969 and 1974, according to Rolling Stone. The magazine notes that the group divided lead vocals among Chuck Negron, Hutton, and Cory Wells, and relied on outside songwriters. Hutton says he did not want to be tied to one musical style and that this “hurt us a lot,” because audiences wanted a clearer backstory.
Band lineup
Hutton and guitarist Michael Allsup are the only two surviving members of the group’s best-known lineup. Hutton has kept Three Dog Night going with an entirely new lineup that includes his sons, Dash Hutton and Timothy Hutton, since Allsup retired in 2021.
Hutton said Three Dog Night started as his group: “It was always my group.”
Early career in Los Angeles
Hutton says he worked at Hanna-Barbera and later moved to MGM, and that at Hanna-Barbera he wrote songs and recorded them himself. He also recalls living in Laurel Canyon in the mid-1960s, where Stephen Stills and Neil Young rented houses nearby. He says he first crossed paths with Brian Wilson while recording demos at Gold Star studio and later became friends with him.
