Miley Cyrus opened her “Miley: Bass Persuades – Live at the Hollywood Bowl” shows on Friday night at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. It was her first headlining performance in years. The pop star is going by the single name Miley for this era.
The Friday and Sunday shows were announced in early September, along with the news that her album “Bass Persuades” would be released on September 18 via Atlantic Records. In an Instagram post at the time, Cyrus wrote that the Hollywood Bowl is her favorite place to experience music and see her favorite artists, and that she had sat in its seats many times but had never taken its stage.
Limited headlining history
Cyrus has not headlined outside of festivals in some time. According to Variety, the closest approximation was a performance earlier this year at the taping of the “Hannah Montana” 20th anniversary special, and before that “Spotify’s Billions Club Live” in Paris last June for a select group of fans. The month before that, she debuted her album “Something Beautiful” at a fan-only TikTok event at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. Her last full tour was for “Bangerz” in 2014.
Cyrus told British Vogue in 2023 that after the “Bangerz” tour she decided to take a break from touring. She described the decision as a question of desire: whether she wanted to live her life for anyone else’s pleasure or fulfillment other than her own.
Residencies over touring
In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe last month, Cyrus said she would be more open to doing residencies. Speaking of the Bowl shows, she said: “This is the ultimate dress rehearsal.”
Variety’s setlist for the Bowl show is being updated live.
