Open water swimming at the Olympics is contested over a 10km marathon distance, raced in a single field rather than through preliminary heats. Athletes swim looped courses in natural open water, with position and drafting tactics playing as much a role as raw speed. Unlike pool swimming, there is no qualifying round structure within the Games themselves — each scheduled race stands as the event itself for that gender. The two sessions below, both at Belmont Shore in Long Beach, most likely correspond to the men’s and women’s 10km races held on separate days.

Each session covers one complete race, and open water marathon swims typically take close to two hours from start to finish, given the distance and the need to navigate multiple laps of the course. Spectators can expect to watch swimmers pass viewing points near shore repeatedly rather than complete the event in one straight line, which gives several chances to see the field up close over the course of the session.

Both sessions listed run in the afternoon, starting at 1:30 PM on July 17 and July 18, at the same Belmont Shore venue in Long Beach. The schedule below does not indicate that either date is designated specifically as a final, so each should be treated as a standalone race day for its respective event.
