Yard Act Loosen Collar on Adventurous Third Album

The British rock band Yard Act has released their third album, You’re Gonna Need A Little Music, marking a significant shift in their sonic approach. The Leeds quartet, known for sardonic observations about modern life packaged in wiry post-punk, sounds surprisingly liberated on the new record, loosening their collar without abandoning their core instincts.

Producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen, who has worked with Beck, Nine Inch Nails, M83, Air, St. Vincent, Wolf Alice, and Deafheaven, gives Yard Act a broader instrumental palette than before. Pianos weave through songs previously driven by angular guitars, while rhythms flirt with funk and dance-rock. The album marks the first record the four members wrote together in the same room, allowing their instinctive chemistry to shine through with noticeably more spontaneity than predecessors.

Standout tracks include “New Beginnings,” which barrels forward with infectious confidence anchored by muscular guitar work and a shout-along chorus, and the title track, which glides with dreamy piano phrases and understated guitars. “Thrill of the Chase” represents the strongest marriage of concept and execution, with a relentless rhythm section reflecting the endless pursuit of conformity that vocalist James Smith criticizes in his lyrics.

While certain songs successfully couple lyrical and musical prowess, not every track reaches the same ambition. “Fiction” leans too heavily on a repetitive hook, and “Cherophobe Rock” feels somewhat generic beside the rest of the album’s personality. Despite these moments, You’re Gonna Need A Little Music succeeds because it refuses to repeat what Yard Act has already mastered, finding brighter colors to paint with while retaining their cynicism.
