There’s More to Tinashe’s New Album ‘Quantum Baby’ Than Being ‘Nasty’

Tinashe has never been one to shy away from life’s uncertainties—or the music industry’s unpredictability—and her latest album, Quantum Baby, is proof of that. The success of her cheeky, innuendo-laden hit “Nasty” is just the icing on the cake.

“You never really know when a song is going to take off. It’s always a surprise,” Tinashe said of the track, which reached No. 61 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50. “It’s been a blessing, and I’m just super excited about it.”

Leading off her seventh studio album Quantum Baby, which dropped last Friday, “Nasty” became a sensation after a social media user combined a snippet of the song with a viral video clip. The track caught the attention of music legends like Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Anitta, and more, with its standout lyric “match my freak” becoming a popular catchphrase.

Quantum Baby marks the second installment of a three-part trilogy and invites fans to explore Tinashe’s personal universe at the most fundamental, molecular level—a nod to quantum physics. “Since leaving my major label and going independent, I’ve really honed my creative process over the last three albums,” she explained. “This second part of the trilogy is all about getting to know me on a deeper level.”

The eight-track album, which runs just over 22 minutes, features production from Nosaj Thing, Ricky Reed, and sdtroy, with Tinashe writing on every track. Known for blending genres like R&B, pop, dance, and electronic music with precise choreography, Tinashe debuted in 2014 with Aquarius, her highest-charting album to date. Despite not always replicating that success, she left the major label system to pursue a more independent path, and her career has thrived thanks to a loyal fanbase.

“When I first came onto the scene, I was young and inexperienced. I’ve learned so much and gained so much confidence since then,” Tinashe reflected. “Being a young woman in male-dominated spaces can be tough—you don’t always feel empowered to speak up. But now, I have a much stronger sense of what I want, and I’m not afraid to give direction.”

Quantum Baby was recorded in Tinashe’s home studio and features tracks like the sultry trap-soul tune “Thirsty” and the Kaytranada-inspired “Getting No Sleep,” her current single. The album’s intro, “No Simulation,” sets the tone with its atmospheric soundscapes and introspective lyrics: “We’re all looking for something/where are we going/what do we do?”

“At this point in my life, I’m focused on finding great experiences and peace of mind,” Tinashe said. “I’m not trying to force anything—I just want to let things flow.”

Though Tinashe has collaborated with platinum-selling artists like Britney Spears, Chris Brown, Future, and Nick Jonas in the past, she’s no longer chasing big features or producer placements to climb the charts. “When I first released ‘2 On,’ I set the bar really high,” she said, reflecting on her hit with Schoolboy Q, which peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. “But I’ve made better records since I stopped worrying about chart performance. Now, I just focus on my instincts and creating music that feels good to me.”

What feels best to Tinashe now? Freedom—freedom from creative constraints and industry politics. Her trendsetting style and fashion-forward eye have made her a frequent guest at fashion shows and red carpet events, and she’s even expressed interest in returning to acting. This October, she’ll kick off her 23-date Match My Freak world tour, produced by Live Nation, to support her new music.

Tinashe has successfully navigated the turbulent waters of the music industry, and she’s more than willing to steer her own ship. “Finding contentment in yourself and in your artistry is super important for a music artist,” she said. “The music industry is so volatile, but I started to feel free and content when I stopped setting expectations for myself. That’s real success—just creating great art that’s timeless.”
