Shawn Mendes has candidly shared a deeply personal experience in his latest single, “Why Why Why,” where he reflects on a moment of fear and uncertainty about potentially becoming a father. The song, released on his 26th birthday, August 8, is one of the first tracks from his upcoming fifth studio album, *Shawn*.

The song’s lyrics reveal Mendes’ emotional turmoil: “Opened up my journal to a page / Everything that hurts me’s still the same / Feels like there’s nothing new for me to say / Why, why, why? Why, why, why?” In the bridge, he continues, “I thought I was about to be a father / Shook me to the core, I'm still a kid (Ooh) / Sometimes I still cry out for my mother / Why, why, why? Why, why, why?”

In addition to “Why Why Why,” Mendes released another single titled “Isn’t That Enough.” While it's unclear if these songs are based on actual events in Mendes’ life, the artist has hinted at the deeply personal nature of his music. When announcing the album earlier this month, Mendes reflected on his journey: “Music really can be medicine.”

He shared more about his recent struggles, saying, “Two years ago, I had no idea who I was. A year ago, I couldn’t even step into a studio without being overwhelmed with panic. Now, to be here with 12 finished songs feels like a blessing. I’m incredibly thankful for my friends and family. Life can be tough, but having a small group of people you trust makes it a lot easier. I can’t imagine getting through the last few years, let alone creating this album, without them.”

Mendes’ previous album, *Wonder*, came out nearly four years ago. In 2022, he embarked on a world tour to promote the album but had to cancel most of his U.S. dates after just seven shows due to mental health issues. He explained on Instagram that he “wasn’t prepared for the toll” of touring again and needed time to focus on his personal well-being.

Recently, Mendes and his ex-girlfriend, Camila Cabello, sparked rumors of getting back together after they were spotted together at the final game of the Copa América soccer tournament. The pair, who began dating in 2019 after years of friendship and speculation, broke up in 2021. However, they were seen reconnecting at Coachella in April 2023, where they were spotted kissing and dancing. Though Cabello was reported as single in May 2023, their recent sightings have fueled speculation about their relationship.

Shawn’s new album is scheduled for release on October 18.
