Five Canadian songs have been selected for the second SOCAN Polaris Song Prize shortlist, with the winner to be announced at Massey Hall on September 22. The prize awards $10,000 split among Canadian performers and songwriters.

The SOCAN Polaris Song Prize has revealed its second-ever shortlist, featuring songs by Angine de Poitrine, Charlotte Cornfield, PUP, Patrick Watson & Martha Wainwright, and Charlotte Day Wilson featuring Saya Gray.

The five shortlisted songs are:

Angine de Poitrine — “Fabienk”
Charlotte Cornfield — “Hurts Like Hell”
PUP — “Hunger For Death”
Patrick Watson & Martha Wainwright — “House on Fire”
Charlotte Day Wilson featuring Saya Gray — “Lean”

The shortlist was selected from a 20-song longlist by a 205-person jury of music critics, academics, journalists and industry members. Two of the shortlisted artists—Angine de Poitrine and Charlotte Cornfield—have also secured spots on the Polaris Music Prize album shortlist. The winner will receive $10,000 split between Canadian performers and credited Canadian songwriters, to be announced at the concert and award ceremony at Massey Hall on September 22, hosted by musician and broadcaster Odario Williams.

The SOCAN Polaris Song Prize was created to recognise artists not necessarily releasing full albums or bodies of work. In its inaugural edition, the prize was awarded to Mustafa for “Gaza is Calling.”
