Berlioz, Bernheim and More: Classic Arts in New York This Week Musicals & Broadway
Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall, the Metropolitan Opera and smaller New York venues present symphonic, operatic and chamber programs, with listed dates from November 4 to 7.

New York’s classical arts calendar includes several notable events this week. Louis Langrée will conduct the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique at Carnegie Hall on November 5. The program is an all-Berlioz evening that also includes the overture to Les francs-juges and the song cycle Les nuits d’été, with tenor Benjamin Bernheim.

The Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, performs at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall on November 5. The program includes Janáček’s String Quartet No. 2 and Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” quartet, arranged for string orchestra by Mahler.

Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins the New York Philharmonic to perform Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 at David Geffen Hall, with performances November 4 through 7. Rafael Payare conducts the program, which also includes Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9.

The Metropolitan Opera continues performances this week of Cherubini’s Medea, Puccini’s Tosca and Missy Mazzoli’s Lincoln in the Bardo. Mazzoli’s opera, based on the novel by George Saunders, had its world premiere on October 19. Baritone Peter Mattei stars as Abraham Lincoln in the Lileana Blain-Cruz production. Medea and Tosca are revivals of David McVicar productions, starring Sonya Yoncheva and Saioa Hernández respectively; Hernández makes her Met debut.

Collectio Musicorum presents a free concert of operetta excerpts on November 6 at Christ and St. Stephen’s Church on the Upper West Side. Death of Classical presents Ellis Ludwig-Leone’s Quiet Hours at Riverside Church’s Christ Chapel on November 7. Ludwig-Leone composed the cycle of nine nocturnes for nine pianist friends, each of whom plays one nocturne.
