The Beach Boys played Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Sunday night. No major announcements were made from the stage, but many fans in attendance believed they might be witnessing Mike Love’s last show leading the touring edition of the group.
John Stamos, who has appeared with the band on and off for 41 years, wrote in a nearly 1,200-word Facebook post on Sunday: “I’m not saying tonight is the end. God, I hope it isn’t.” He added that he wondered whether it “could be the last time I get to stand behind Mike.” Stamos also posted a 400-word statement on Instagram on Sunday.
Before the show, Stamos and Christian Love, Mike Love’s son, who also performs with the band, spoke to the audience in front of the curtain. The show opened with “Do It Again,” but Love did not sing lead. He remained seated for the performance, singing along, and spoke briefly to the crowd, saying he had “been going through health challenges, but I had to make it to the Ryman.” At the close, as Queen’s “We Are the Champions” played over the loudspeakers, Stamos and Christian Love helped Love to his feet and held his arms aloft until the curtains closed.
The Nashville show followed a performance the previous night in Cincinnati, the group’s first public concert since it canceled a series of dates beginning in July. After the Cincinnati show, viral video of Love prompted social media comments about whether he would retire.
The group’s official website lists three upcoming dates, the next on Nov. 11 at Walt Disney World. It is unclear whether those dates will be fulfilled.
