The Game's Label Sues UMG Over Under-Promotion of 2022 Album Music News
100 Entertainment alleges Universal Music Group's Virgin Music Group spent only $179,000 of a promised $500,000 marketing budget for Drillmatic – Heart vs. Mind, seeking at least $500,000 in damages for diminished commercial performance.

Universal Music Group (UMG) faces a breach of contract lawsuit filed Wednesday, September 30, 2026, by 100 Entertainment, the independent label run by rapper The Game (Jayceon Terrell Taylor). The complaint alleges UMG’s Virgin Music Group spent just $179,000 of a promised $500,000 recoupable marketing budget for The Game’s 2022 album Drillmatic – Heart vs. Mind.

According to the lawsuit, Virgin Music Group failed to deploy key digital promotional opportunities and spent zero dollars on radio promotion. The album debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 in August 2022 and spent two weeks on the chart. 100 Entertainment claims it was forced to cover a substantial portion of music video production costs for the single “Stupid” featuring Big Sean, which UMG has not reimbursed.

“Deprived of nearly two-thirds of its bargained-for promotional support during the critical release cycle, the album did not perform as it would have had Defendants administered the marketing and promotion fund as the parties approved,” wrote 100 Entertainment’s lawyer Michael Trauben in the complaint.

100 Entertainment is seeking financial damages of at least $500,000 for the album’s “diminished commercial performance” and lost royalties, streaming revenue, and sales income. UMG and Virgin previously denied any breach of contract in legal communications to 100 Entertainment. A UMG representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Drillmatic – Heart vs. Mind is The Game’s eleventh solo studio album, featuring collaborations with Ye, Fivio Foreign, Ty Dolla $ign, Roddy Ricch, Lil Wayne, French Montana, Tory Lanez, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Cam’ron, Rick Ross, and Chris Brown across 30 tracks.
