Brandi Carlile announced an expanded edition of her 2025 album Returning To Myself near its one-year anniversary, titled Returning To Myself (Sad Gay Version). The new edition will feature all songs from the original pressing plus intimate reimagined versions of every track.
Returning To Myself (Sad Gay Version) is scheduled for digital release September 25 through Interscope Records and Lost Highway Records. Carlile returned to Long Pond Studio to co-produce four tracks with Aaron Dessner. The digital edition will exclusively feature a new cover of Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes.” An autographed rainbow-colored vinyl edition is also being released, with fans required to pre-order by October 1 to secure a copy.
As a preview, Carlile released “Human (Sad Gay Version),” which features composer and electronic musician Jon Hopkins. The reimagining transforms the originally electrified song into a tender piano ballad that builds in intensity.
“I loved to toy with my own emotions by seeking out songs in a genre few call by its rightful name — the ‘Sad Gay’ genre,” Carlile said in a statement. “I want to be brought back to the edge of my bed again and I want to bring you with me,” she added.
Carlile is currently on the second leg of her North American tour, with dates scheduled through November 2026 across North America and Europe, including stops in Portland, Nashville, Red Rocks, and London.
