Boy George has been removed from Bandcamp and parted ways with his longtime label manager following the release of “We Will Dance Again,” an AI-created song expressing support for Israeli government actions against Palestinians.
The Culture Club singer announced the Bandcamp removal on Monday via social media. The platform’s policy prohibits music “generated wholly or in substantial part by AI.” Boy George had publicly disclosed his use of artificial intelligence to create the track, which included lyrics such as “You say genocide / I say war” and references to “selective memory” regarding Jewish history.
On July 31st, Boy George announced he had “parted company” with Tony Pontius, manager of his BGP record label, over disagreement about releasing the song. Boy George stated that Pontius had refused to release “We Will Dance Again” and that he responded by ending their working relationship.
The controversies extend beyond the label split. Boy George was removed from a London production of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, in which he was cast as King Herod, only days before his scheduled debut. The removal followed shortly after the song’s release.
In a social media post, Boy George wrote: “In Buddhism we understand that every action comes with a consequence.” He added that he was losing some people in his life due to his decision to support his Jewish friends.
