Polaris released “Without You” on September 3, their first new music since guitarist Ryan Siew’s death in 2023. The track marks a significant moment for the Australian metalcore band, which recorded their previous album Fatalism with Siew before his death.
Vocalist Rick Schneider told Billboard the band wanted the release to acknowledge Siew’s irreplaceable role in the group. “He is kind of, in many ways, irreplaceable,” Schneider said. “There is no quick and easy fix to get someone in there to replace what his significance was.” Drummer Daniel Furnari described the release as “bittersweet and cathartic,” noting the band spent years considering how to convey their loss through music.
The band continued touring after Siew’s death, including the Fatalism tour. Furnari said the decision to carry on felt necessary: “This band is too much of a part of who we are as people. It’s so tied to all of our identities.” The group has additional music in progress but is resisting pressure to release a full album immediately.
Polaris achieved significant milestones since their 2017 breakthrough with The Mortal Coil. Fatalism debuted at No. 1 on Australia’s ARIA Albums Chart in September 2023 and won best independent heavy album or EP at the 2024 AIR Awards. The band recently supported Linkin Park on an Australian arena run in March and made their Knotfest Australia debut in 2025.
At Good Things Festival in December, Polaris will perform as the highest-billed Australian act—a significant progression from their 2022 appearance on a smaller stage. The festival runs December 4–6 across Melbourne (Flemington Racecourse), Sydney (Sydney Showground), and Brisbane (Brisbane Showgrounds), with headliners including Limp Bizkit, Simple Plan, and Spiritbox.
