Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan released a remix of ‘Expectations’ on Thursday, October 15, along with an accompanying music video. The track originally appears on Rodrigo’s third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, which topped the Billboard 200.
The remix adds Roan to the 1980s-style synth-pop song about setting high standards in dating. ‘Expectations’ is a rare collaboration for Rodrigo and the first for Roan, who had not previously appeared on another artist’s track or had a guest on one of her own albums. Rodrigo’s only prior official duet was with Robert Smith on ‘What’s Wrong With Me’ from You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
The video was released a few hours after Rodrigo shared a teaser. It has a game-show theme, with the two artists appearing to compete on The Big Expectations Show in various retro-style outfits. In the clip, Roan says sarcastically that Olivia does remixes now.
Background
Rodrigo and Roan have been friends for several years, and both work with producer Dan Nigro. Roan opened for Rodrigo on the Sour Tour and the Guts World Tour. She also returned to the Guts stage to perform ‘Hot to Go!’ with Rodrigo.
In August, the two reunited at Daisy Chain Fields, a festival Rodrigo founded this year to raise funds for charities supporting women and girls. After her set, Roan posted on Instagram thanking Rodrigo for using her platform for good and for supporting artists like her.
