Journey drummer Deen Castronovo played a full 29-song show with the band at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, after he was assisted off stage following two songs at a Tulsa concert on Thursday night and admitted to a Tulsa hospital. No cause has been publicly disclosed.
Guitarist Neal Schon said in a Facebook comment early Sunday that Castronovo “crushed last night,” and wrote on X that the drummer was “back in rare form.” Castronovo played drums for the full show and sang lead vocals on the five songs he normally takes the lead on during this tour. According to user contributions on Setlists.fm, he sang the sole lead on “Lights,” “Keep on Runnin’,” and “Precious Time,” and shared lead vocals with Jonathan Cain on “Just the Same Way” and “Anytime.”
Before the San Antonio show, Castronovo posted a message on his Facebook page thanking fans for their support and apologizing for not finishing the Tulsa concert. He thanked Cain, Schon and everyone at the BOK Center for lifting him up in prayer that night. On Friday, Schon had said the drummer would return for the San Antonio show.
During Thursday’s Tulsa concert, there was an approximate 25-minute break before the music resumed with Journey drum technician Steve Toomey taking over on drums. That night’s show was reduced from 29 songs to 19.
