Troye Sivan has released “Party,” the second single from his forthcoming album She’s the Best, due October 9. The stomping electro-dance track samples Madonna’s No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Music” and is accompanied by a lush video directed by Gordon von Steiner.
Filmed at a castle in Berkeley, England, the choreography-heavy video stars Sivan as a knight in shining armor in medieval times, featuring sword fighting and revelry. Sir Ian McKellen, who first worked with Sivan in a production of Waiting for Godot in Perth when Sivan was 14, provides introductory voice-over narration: “The conquest is nearly behind us. Fires blaze from one end of the realm to the other. And what is victory, if not celebrated? For at long last, a party.”
Sivan said on an episode of the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast that the concept explored queer celebration across centuries. “We were thinking: What would this party have looked like 100 years ago, 200 years ago?” he said. “Sir Ian McKellen did the voice-over, and that was important to me because it’s this idea of queer lineage and each generation setting the stage.”
Von Steiner previously directed Sivan’s videos for “Got Me Started,” “One of Your Girls” and “Rush,” with the latter earning Grammy Award nominations for best music video. “Party” was written by Sivan, Leland, Tyde Mellet, Rob Feher, Kaelyn Behr, Elvira Anderfjärd, Tove Burman and Luka Kloser, and produced by Mellet, Feher, Behr and Sivan.
