Outkast is suing rapper and producer Ovrkast (Silas Wilson) for trademark infringement, alleging he “knowingly, willfully, intentionally, and maliciously” chose a nearly identical name to link himself to the legendary hip-hop duo. The lawsuit was filed in Atlanta federal court on September 16, 2026.
According to the complaint, Outkast’s legal team sent Wilson a cease-and-desist more than a year ago demanding he change his stage name. After negotiations, Wilson agreed to rebrand as “Overkxst,” which the duo approved. However, Outkast claims Wilson refused to make the switch when required to do so earlier in 2026 and continues to perform under the Ovrkast name.
Outkast’s lawyers argue that Wilson himself has acknowledged the confusion. In a 2025 Rolling Stone interview, Wilson admitted that fans frequently confuse the two names, stating: “Mad n****s do that shit. They read Ovrkast [as] Outkast. They’re like, oh my God, I thought they said Outkast.” The duo’s legal team cited this statement as evidence of “actual confusion” among consumers, a key factor in trademark infringement cases.
This is not the first time Outkast has aggressively enforced its intellectual property. In 2023, the duo sued an electronic dance music duo calling itself ATLiens, named after one of Outkast’s best-known songs. That case settled in February on confidential terms.
On September 22, 2026, Ovrkast responded to the lawsuit on Instagram, writing: “I thought it was love?” while tagging André 3000 and Big Boi.
