CD sales surged 16 percent in the first half of 2026, with Gen Z and millennial fans purchasing 16.3 million units in the U.S. alone, according to an industry report by Luminate. The format outpaced vinyl, which rose 2.4 percent over the same period.
Korean pop accounts for a substantial portion of the CD revival, with BTS’ Arirang the year’s top-selling disc so far. However, broader cultural shifts are also driving demand. Sixty percent of Gen Z fans now say they listen mostly to music from the Nineties or earlier, compared to 18 percent five years ago.
Younger listeners cite several reasons for choosing physical media over streaming: avoiding data tracking, accessing complete album versions without edits, and enjoying higher audio quality. CDs also eliminate the distractions of smartphones, which serve as the primary streaming device for most users.
Luminate identifies K-pop and indie rock as the genres where fans are most committed to purchasing physical media, classifying these audiences as “purchase-based superfans.” Vinyl’s slower production timeline means some albums are edited to fit the format, whereas CDs preserve full track listings as originally released.
