Duncan Sheik, the singer behind the 1996 hit “Barely Breathing,” is in critical but stable condition and receiving medical care, according to a statement posted to his social media account on Wednesday.
“We would like to share an update with Duncan’s fans and the public. Duncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition,” the statement read. “Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time.”
The cause of Sheik’s medical condition has not been disclosed. A representative for the artist did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Sheik’s 1996 self-titled debut album featured “Barely Breathing,” which was certified gold and reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining on the charts for 55 consecutive weeks. The song earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Beyond his recording career, Sheik has composed music for film and theatre, including the score for the 2004 drama A Home at the End of the World and the music for the Broadway rock musical Spring Awakening (2006). He also created the score for the musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho, which premiered at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2013 before opening on Broadway in 2016.
