California Governor Gavin Newsom signed state bill SB 931 on Sunday, officially recognizing September 25 as Dolly Parton Day in the Golden State. The date references Parton’s hit song “9 to 5.”
State Senator Shannon Grove (R), who co-authored the bipartisan bill with State Senator John Laird (D), said in a statement: “Dolly Parton sparkled on every stage she ever stood on, but her brightest sparkle was the literacy legacy she built through the Imagination Library.”
San Francisco will hold a free “Dolly Day” celebration on September 25 featuring music, rhinestones, and remembrance. Nashville, which previously renamed its airport after Parton, has also designated the date as Dolly Parton Day, with Mayor Freddie O’Connell planning citywide events culminating in a fireworks show.
Portland, Oregon and Texas’ Montgomery and Hayes counties have also approved resolutions declaring September 25 as Dolly Parton Day. Portland City Council President Jamie Dunphy said: “On 9/25, let’s celebrate Dolly the way she lived… with kindness, grace and a lot of joy.”
