Travis Barker advised his son Landon Barker to turn down an offer to appear on The Voice, the Blink-182 drummer said during an August 8 appearance on The New York Times‘ Popcast.
“My son called me the other day and he’s like, ‘Hey, they offered me to go on The Voice,” Travis said. “And I was like, ‘Dude, you’re way too cool for that.'”
Travis encouraged Landon, 22, to consider whether his musical idols would have pursued the same route. “If your idol is Kurt Cobain, would he ever do The Voice? No,” he said. The drummer emphasized the importance of developing an authentic artistic identity rather than rushing to capitalize on every platform.
“I’m in the studio, I hear the songs that he’s creating,” Travis said. “There’s no rush, you know?”
Travis acknowledged that his own appearances on American Idol might seem contradictory, but distinguished between guest spots as a band member and competing as a solo artist. “I’m different,” he said. “I’m doing fun stuff that’s just fun for me ’cause I’m a drummer and I’m not in the forefront.”
Landon has already toured with The Fray as part of his emerging music career. Travis advised his son to “stay on your own trajectory” and not let pressure to move quickly dictate his next steps.
