Rodrigo confirmed the track’s existence in June after fans spotted the title in a studio photograph of songs considered for her album “You Look Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.” She said at the time: “I actually really love [‘Serena Joy’]. It didn’t fit on the album.”

The release coincides with Daisy Chain Fields, Rodrigo’s all-female music festival set to take place in Orange County next Saturday. Analog Music Shop noted the exclusive CD release was intended to support both the festival and local independent record stores.

The lyrics printed on the CD’s front cover reference themes of complicity and systemic oppression. Key recurring lines state: “If they do it to them / They’ll do it to you.” The title references Serena Joy, a character in “The Handmaid’s Tale” who holds a position of power within a repressive patriarchy but ultimately becomes subject to the same oppression she helped enable.
