Brooklyn rapper Fivio Foreign is moving toward Christian rap after a clip of new music surfaced this week. In an interview with The Shade Room, he explained the creative shift as a spiritual choice.
“Sometimes in life I feel like you gotta listen to that voice that’s talking to you,” Foreign said. “I feel like everybody is spiritual, everybody know who God is, right? And they pray a couple times, but you gotta actually do something for God.”
Foreign resisted the gospel artist label, drawing a parallel to his earlier reluctance to be categorized as a drill artist. “I don’t feel like I’m a gospel artist and I really don’t feel like I’m doing gospel music,” he said. “I just name it gospel music because I know what that means. But I feel like it’s just music from my heart. I got all types of beats on it… I don’t want to put it in a category.”
He emphasized his goal is to “praise God through my music and not worship the devil through my music, push a positive image and change.” Foreign expressed interest in future collaborations with gospel acts Mary Mary and Kirk Franklin.
Foreign previously appeared on Kanye West’s 2021 album Donda, delivering a verse on “Off the Grid.”
