Roxette's 'It Must Have Been Love' Hits 1B YouTube Views Music News
The Swedish pop duo's 1987 power ballad, featured in Pretty Woman, becomes their first music video to reach one billion views on YouTube nearly 40 years after release.

Roxette’s “It Must Have Been Love” has crossed one billion views on YouTube this week, marking the Swedish pop duo’s first music video to reach the milestone. Originally released in 1987, the power ballad features clips from the 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman, in which a version of the song appeared on the official soundtrack and played during a pivotal emotional scene near the end of the film.

The single became a major hit in the United States following Pretty Woman’s theatrical release in 1990, logging two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending 25 weeks on the chart. It remains one of only four Roxette chart-toppers in the U.S. and their only single to achieve multiple weeks at No. 1. In the United Kingdom, the song peaked at No. 3 on the Official Singles Chart and charted for 14 weeks.

Late singer Marie Fredriksson’s vocal performance on the track became iconic. Fredriksson was diagnosed with a severe brain tumor in 2002 and underwent aggressive treatment. She returned to perform with Roxette on a comeback tour in 2009 but retired from live performances in 2016 on doctors’ advice. She died in 2019 following a 17-year battle with cancer.

Roxette is currently touring Europe for the Live – Back Again! 2026 tour, celebrating the 40th anniversary of their debut album. The lineup features founder and main songwriter Per Gessle alongside Swedish artist Lena Philipsson on female lead vocals.
