Boy George has dropped out of a London production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium, where he was set to play King Herod from August 3–15 alongside Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Richard Armitage, Simon Russell Beale, Layton Williams and Julian Clary.
The withdrawal came days after the 65-year-old Culture Club singer released a pro-Israel song titled “We Will Dance Again” (Hebrew: “עוד נרקוד”), which drew significant public criticism. In the track, George sings: “You say genocide, I say war / When you’re attacked, what’s what the army’s for.” He later stated he created the song using artificial intelligence.
Paul Kemsley, George’s manager, announced the decision on social media. “The decision has been made with the utmost respect for the producers, the creative team and the entire company,” Kemsley wrote, apologizing to ticket holders. “George has never been afraid to stand by his personal convictions, and I have always respected him for that. Equally, I believe it is my responsibility to make decisions that are in the best interests of my artist while also showing respect to others.”
George acknowledged the backlash on social media Thursday, writing: “It doesn’t matter what I think or you think. When will you realise you’re doing NOTHING! It’s a fucking joke. I am even falling out with Jewish friends. The madness knows no bounds.”
